Just a week ago, I brought my 8
year old son to the hospital. It so
happened that our newly found Pediatrician who checked on Miggy a month ago due
to his recurring cough was out of town.
I had no choice but to look for a Pediatrician available to check his
condition as the coughing has been so stubborn even after the medication
prescribed by his first Doctor. Good enough we found one.
The Doctor requested an X-ray of my
son's lungs. After 2 hours, the
startling news came. It was Bilateral Pneumonia.
Hearing that, I knew it was serious. I don't know how my son developed
such illness. I blame myself for it actually because I must have missed on
something.
Since my son wasn't having a fever
or wasn't even showing signs of weakness, the Doctor was optimistic that a
closely monitored home medication would be sufficient and a scheduled follow-up
check thereafter.
My son has been asthmatic since he
was about 9 months old which I think makes it even complicated being in the
condition he's in right now. As an asthmatic child, he's not to be exposed to
dust, smoke, strong perfume, talcum powder and even excessive physical
activity. He's also given a diet to
follow and which I am trying to follow as much as possible. He used to love eating Quaker
Oats. Not only is it healthy for him, it’s also
the most convenient meal to put on the breakfast table when you’re a working
single mom. I must have just introduced
him to other goodies that he slowly parted from his usual bowl of oats. I’ll
have to lead him back to it as it’s really healthy for him.
Definitely, food must be fresh. No
preservatives. Avoid instant juices, instant noodles, soft drinks, sweets and
as a rule... anything in excess is harmful.
He responded very well with the
medication and is also very willing to follow his Doctor’s requests. He now has an anti-asthma tablet as his
maintenance. We are going back for his 2nd
follow-up check on the 17th of December. Will keep you all posted on this…
